In equity funding, an organization raises capital by selling shares of ownership. Investors provide funds in exchange for a stake in the enterprise.
Debt funding involves borrowing money that must be repaid over time, typically with interest. Loans can be obtained from banks, credit unions, government programs, or bond issuance.
Some funding mechanisms combine elements of equity and debt. Examples include convertible notes, mezzanine financing, and preferred shares.
These instruments are attractive for organizations seeking flexibility and for investors interested in balancing risk and return.
For non-profits, educational institutions, and social enterprises, capital funding may come from grants, philanthropic gifts, or fundraising campaigns.
These funds do not require repayment but often come with compliance requirements and reporting obligations.
